I know that there aren't currently that many articles, but more are soon to come. Request an article on a game over here --->
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (or Mario Kart for short) is one of the first games that come to mind when you think about Nintendo. Featuring Mario, Luigi, and 42 other characters (DLC included). In it, you get to pick your character, racing kart combination, and the track you play on. There are many different modes that you can play, and we will cover them all. Somethings in this article might not make sense, so click below for definitions.
The default controller inputs are A: go; B: stop/go backwards; X&Y: Nothing; Right Joystick: up for go, down for stop/go backwards; Left Joystick: direction control; D-Pad(Arrow Keys): Nothing; R: Hop; L: Use Item; ZR: Hop; ZL: Use Item Plus/Minus: Opens Menu (Note: Pressing L or ZL with no item will honk your horn[no use]) (Note: Holding down ZR will initiate a drift.)
To fully understand the rest of this guide, first there are some fundamentals. 2 features for beginners are auto drive and auto go. Auto Drive will help course correct your steering and make it near impossible to fall off the course (Don't feel bad if you do), which can help even out the game between professionals and beginners. Auto Go makes it so that you do not have to press A or move up on the right joystick to go, it just automatically moves you. Drifting is another important mechanic. When you drift, you can charge up to a purple mini-turbo (Orange with auto drive), which will give you a boost. There are three levels: blue, orange, then purple, and purple giving you the biggest boost. You charge mini-turbos by either the sharpness of your drift or the length of your drift.
Grand Prix can be played with 1-4 players. To start, you pick your character and kart combination, and then what cup you want to do. A cup consists of 4 unique races, which, when selected, will play them in the order described when you hover over that cup from left to right. In Grand Prix, there are 16 players total, with COM's to fill in the extra slots. After each race, you get points. 1st, you get 19, 2nd, you get 16, 3rd, you get 14, and it decreases by one from there. At the end of the cup, whoever has the most points wins!
Time Trials can be played with only one person. Again, you pick your character and kart, and then instead of picking a cup, you pick an individual race. You have a timer in the top righthand corner of the screen, and your goal is to beat the course as fast as possible. You are given three mushrooms, and no other items are available. You can race at 150cc or 200cc. Also, if you have Nintendo switch online, you can upload your personal bests.
VS Race is just like Grand Prix, except you can customize the race more. You can choose the speed, if you want teams, custom, normal, or frantic items, the difficulty of COM's, if you want COM's to be in the race(You can only remove COM's from the race if you are in multiplayer mode), The vehicles that COM's drive, If you want to do a cup in order, choose which races in which order, or completely random, and how many races you want to play before you see who wins.
Battle can be played with 1-4 players. There are 5 modes, Ballon Battle, Renegade Roundup, Bob-omb Blast, Coin Runners, and Shine Thief. In Balloon Battle, your goal is to get items to destroy other players balloons. Whoever has the most pops at the end wins. In Renegade Roundup, all players are split into 2 even teams. If you are a robber, your goal is to stay away from the cops and free your teammates who do get caught. If you are a cop, then your goal is to capture all the robbers to win. If at the end, not all the robbers are captured, the robbers win. Next up is Bob-omb Blast, which is like Balloon Battle, but only bob-ombs can be obtained! Second-to-last is coin runners, where your goal is to have to most coins at the end of the game. And last but not least, Shine Thief. In this game, your goal is to have to shine for as many seconds as possible. You can change the length of the game, normal or frantic items, the difficulty of the COM's, if you want to choose or have the courses you play random, and how many rounds you want to play.
In Online Play, you can play with 1 or 2 players. There are four immediate choices when you enter the menu. Worldwide, Regional, Friends, and Tournaments. In Worldwide, you can do Battle or VS Race. In Battle, you do a regular battle against real people, no COM's. In VS race, you get to choose from 3 courses, or random. Everybody votes, and it is decided by random. In both modes you have a chance to earn or lose VR. In Regional, It's the same thing but you will only play against people from your region. In Friends, you have the choice to either create a room to play with your friends or join a room that you know the code to. Finally, in Tournaments, you can create, join, search by tournament type, or search by active tournaments to find the one that best suits you.
In Wireless Play, you can also have 1 or 2 players. It works the same way as the friends' tab, except you can create a room and it will be available to anyone who is on your WiFi-Network.
Finally, at the end! These are all the modes that this game has to offer. Please note that this article is assuming you have both the booster pass, which allows you to play all courses in the game, and Nintendo Switch Online, which is a great deal for only $20 a year. If you want in depth tips on how to become a better player, I recommend some of Shortcats videos. He is a youtuber who talks about Mario Kart, and I will link some of my favorite videos of his below.
